How Red Letter works

Flag methodology

Each church is scored on two independent 0–10 axes — MAGA Alignment and Apostasy — from public material (website, sermons, official socials, the lead pastor, the church-finder listing). The axes are reported as a pair and never averaged: a church can be high on one and zero on the other. Every nonzero criterion requires a quoted source; low-coverage scores are marked provisional. This page describes rubric v0.9; the signed-in map carries the current rubric.

Bands (per axis):

  • None (0–1)
  • Mild (2–3)
  • Moderate (4–6)
  • High (7–8)
  • Severe (9–10)

How scores are produced

Scores come from an automated, human-audited pipeline that reads publicly available web content only — the church’s own website, published sermons (audio and video transcribed to text), official social accounts, and the church-finder listing. No private, leaked, or anonymously sourced material is used.

  1. Extraction — candidate quotes are pulled from the captured material against the rubric’s criteria (claude-sonnet-4-6).
  2. Independent verification — every candidate flag is re-checked by a separate model (claude-haiku-4-5-20251001) that confirms or refutes the quote against its source before it can influence any score.
  3. Scoring — verified evidence is scored against the published rubric on this page (claude-sonnet-4-6); the arithmetic (weights, floors, trip-wires) is deterministic and auditable per church.
  4. Deep dive (selected churches) — an opt-in adversarial multi-lens review (lenses: claude-sonnet-4-6, verified by claude-haiku-4-5-20251001, synthesized as prose by claude-opus-4-8 — synthesis never classifies or scores).

Two structural rules hold everywhere: every nonzero criterion requires a verbatim quoted source (no quote, no points), and the two axes are independent and never combined into any composite number.

Score formula

For each axis, the model assigns a 0–10 subscore to each criterion. The pipeline then derives the final axis score using a severity floor, so that one pervasive criterion can define the axis on its own:

weighted_sum   = clamp(0, 10, round( sum( weight_i * subscore_i ) ))
severity_floor = max non-affiliation subscore (the worst single criterion sets the minimum)
tripwire_floor = highest floor from any fired trip-wire (0 if none fired)
floor          = max(severity_floor, tripwire_floor)
score = max(weighted_sum, floor)   [then clamped 0-10]

For MAGA only, a flag bonus (0–2) for the christian_nation criterion is added to that subscore before computing the weighted sum (clamped to 10). Each church’s record in the map shows the weighted sum, the flag bonus, the floor and the reason for it on each axis, so the arithmetic is fully auditable. The floor is often the dominant term: a church with one criterion at 9 scores 9 even if the weighted average of all its criteria is only 6.

MAGA Alignment criteria

MAGA Alignment criteria
criterionmaxwhat earns points
affiliation10SBC (on finder/site) or a hard-right network (Patriot Network, Presence Driven, 'Black Robe'/'Patriot' branding). Finder-only / not surfaced on the site scores low. PRIOR ONLY — its 0.16 weight caps a pure-affiliation church to ≈2 on its own without a political signal.
christian_nation value-laden10 (+2 flag bonus)Nation framed as covenant/Christian nation; 'take our country back'; Kingdom = America; sacralized national symbols. Flag bonus: +1 visible in worship space, +2 giant exterior/rooftop flag or flag-as-motif (added to the subscore, clamped to 10).
veneration10Promoting/defending/excusing Trump or party figures; providential framing ('godly leader', 'anointed', 'God put him there'). Messianic equation with Christ = trip-wire. Calling an opponent 'Jezebel' / 'demonically possessed' = trip-wire (opponent_demonization).
partisan_hostility10DIRECTIONAL — counts toward MAGA only when the hostility or steering runs in the pro-MAGA direction; direction, not intensity, decides. The reference frame is the MAGA movement, not the speaker. SIGNAL (>0), explicit OR coded — direction may be INFERRED from content; most real MAGA hostility names no party, score it: demonizing Democrats/'the left'/liberals/progressives as evil, godless, or the enemy; framing voting Democrat, abortion ('child sacrifice'), or supporting the left as sin or apostasy; get-out-the-vote, endorsement, or celebration for Trump/MAGA candidates (including celebrating a Democratic loss, and 'vote the Bible / your values / the right side' where that means vote Republican); attacking opponents of the MAGA movement, including establishment/'RINO' Republicans attacked for insufficient MAGA loyalty, and the movement's designated enemies ('globalists'/'the cabal'/WEF/'deep state'/'the swamp'; 'Marxists/socialists/communists' as epithets for the opposition; CRT/DEI; 'groomers'/'the trans agenda' framed as an attack on children; BLM as demonic or subversive; 'the lying/fake-news/propaganda media'); the stolen-2020 grievance ('the election was stolen', 'Dominion machines', 'too big to rig', 'stuffed ballot boxes'); and demonizing, as a class, the out-groups the MAGA movement targets — immigrants/migrants/refugees framed as an 'invasion', 'criminals', 'very bad people', or cultural 'replacement' (the nativist register), even when no party is named. NOT SIGNAL (0) regardless of intensity: hostility or criticism aimed AT Trump, a MAGA-aligned administration or officeholder, ICE, or the MAGA movement and its policies — including coded forms ('empire', 'the state', 'this government' when aimed at a MAGA-aligned administration); advocacy FOR the movement's targets (immigrants, refugees, aid recipients, LGBTQ persons); praise of anti-MAGA or anti-ICE protest; and progressive/left political advocacy generally — a left church's critique of 'empire', 'capitalism', or 'Christian nationalism' is the opposite direction. 'The/current/present/last administration' flips referent with the calendar: resolve WHO HOLDS OFFICE by the sermon's publication date — attacking a Democratic administration from the right is signal; attacking a MAGA-aligned administration is 0. ATTRIBUTION: score the speaker's OWN endorsed stance — never material the speaker quotes in order to rebut, lament, or satirize; explicit disavowal = 0. Truly side-neutral civic 'please vote' with no side implied = intensity cap 1. This axis measures MAGA alignment, not political engagement.
partisan_media10Treating partisan media (Fox personalities — Tucker, Hannity — a Fox segment, or its framing) as a TRUSTED AUTHORITY the congregation should follow from the pulpit/official channel. BEHAVIORAL, not a media-diet prior: requires a quoted instance of the church/pastor citing or endorsing partisan media as authoritative. DE-DUP RULE: if a quote BOTH demonizes opponents AND appeals to a media source, score the hostile content under partisan_hostility and score partisan_media ONLY if the authority-appeal is independently present (church recommends watching Fox, plays a clip as teaching, names a host as a trusted voice). A bare hostile phrase echoing a Fox talking-point with no media source cited = partisan_hostility ONLY. Quoting-to-critique = 0. Incidental factual citation = 0. NOT inferred from congregation demographics or a pastor's personal viewing.

Apostasy criteria

Apostasy criteria
criterionmaxwhat earns points
contempt10Contempt or dehumanizing language toward the poor/immigrant/refugee/homeless/outsider; mercy framed as weakness or 'social gospel'. Includes dehumanizing contempt toward LGBTQ persons AS people/outsiders. A policy view is NOT contempt; a traditional doctrinal conviction is NOT contempt — visceral disgust/dehumanization of the PERSON is.
moral_revisionism value-laden10Sexual-ethics revisionism ONLY: LGBTQ affirmed in marriage or ministry leadership; recategorizing sexual sin as good/neutral. Traditional-but-welcoming (historic view, excludes no one) = 0. Contempt/disgust toward LGBTQ persons is the OPPOSITE valence and belongs under `contempt`, NOT here (this criterion requires AFFIRMING the behavior as good). Redefinition of any OTHER historic sin → sin_as_good.
sin_as_good10Recategorizing any historic sin as good/neutral EXCEPT sexual ethics (→ moral_revisionism) and violence (→ sanctified_violence): e.g. greed, pride, idolatry normalized as good. NOT a tripwire.
creedal10Explicit denial in official teaching of a creedal essential (Scripture, Trinity, deity/virgin birth/resurrection of Christ, atonement, grace, judgment, eternal life, regeneration). Trip-wire if in the statement of faith. Silence is NOT denial.
sanctified_violence10Endorsing, glorifying, or calling for ACTUAL physical harm/killing/war against a PRESENT-DAY, REAL, TARGETED group as righteous or God-ordained. Must target a contemporary real group. Bible exposition, metaphorical spiritual warfare, and just-war ethics = 0.

Coded-language lexicon (internal recall aid)

The rubric includes a coded-language lexicon used during ingestion as an internal recall aid, to help recognize indirect phrasing. It is not a displayed flag and not a scorer input — it routes candidate phrases to criteria for the scorer to confirm or reject with a direct quote. The lexicon is not reproduced here, to avoid treating a recall tool as a public checklist.

Trip-wires (auto-floor the axis)

Trip-wires
idaxisfloortrigger
messianicmaga≥ 9Messianic equation of a politician with Christ/savior, or depicting one as Jesus.
named_endorsementmaga≥ 8DIRECTIONAL: pulpit endorsement of a named MAGA-ALIGNED candidate (or 'this is a [Trump] church') — steering the congregation to vote FOR the MAGA side. Endorsement of an anti-MAGA/Democratic candidate from the pulpit does NOT fire this MAGA-axis tripwire (that is the opposite direction; a partisan-left pulpit endorsement is out of scope for the MAGA axis). Direction is judged by the endorsed candidate's alignment, resolved by the sermon's publication date. Score the speaker's OWN endorsement, not a candidate they name in order to rebut or warn against.
anti_democratic_theologymaga≥ 10Rejection of constitutional democracy in favor of divine rule, in EITHER form. (a) Negative form: democracy called sinful/ungodly/'mobocracy'; advocacy for theocracy or a Christian Republic as the only legitimate government; 'I thank God we are not a democracy' from the pulpit. (b) Affirmative dominionist/NAR decree form: decreeing or commanding that all civil law and the branches of government submit to God's kingdom, declaring a branch of government a throne of Christ, or tasking the church with realigning the government under divine rule (e.g. 'we command every law of this nation to submit', 'realign our three branches of government', 'the judicial branch where Jesus Christ is enthroned', 'we bind demonic spirits over the Supreme Court'). Ordinary worship/liturgy that God reigns / Jesus is King / 'Thy kingdom come' is NOT this trigger — it requires commanding specific civil institutions to submit. Fire this floor ONLY when the decree theology is the church's SUSTAINED, leadership-attributable identity; a single guest sermon or one-off prayer, however extreme, does not establish it (keep such a church at the christian_nation subscore the density warrants).
opponent_demonizationmaga≥ 10DIRECTIONAL: theological demonization (literally demonic/possessed/Jezebel/antichrist, or a pagan idol e.g. Molech-worshiper) of the MAGA-aligned side's OPPONENTS — an anti-MAGA/Democratic candidate, party, or movement figure — from the pulpit. Requires explicit theological demonization of a specific named opponent, not merely calling them bad people. A church demonizing a MAGA-ALIGNED figure (e.g. calling Trump 'the antichrist') does NOT trigger this MAGA-axis tripwire — that is the opposite direction. Evidence for this tripwire typically appears under the partisan_hostility criterion.
sanctified_violence_twapostasy≥ 8Sanctifying violence/cruelty toward a group as righteous — forces sanctified_violence criterion to 10.
creedal_denial_sofapostasy≥ 8Explicit denial of a creedal essential in the statement of faith.

False-positive guards

  • Patriotism != nationalism: praying for leaders, a July-4 mention, a small interior flag = low; sacralizing the nation = high.
  • Traditional-but-welcoming = 0 on moral_revisionism (historic view while excluding no one). The flag is affirmation, not having a conviction.
  • Policy view != contempt: score dehumanization of people, not a position on law.
  • Silence != denial: score creedal only on explicit/functional denial, never on omission.
  • Affiliation is a PRIOR: SBC/network points alone never push MAGA above the cap without a political signal.
  • Do not score off the homepage alone.
  • Each axis requires its own distinct evidentiary element — never the same clause counted twice. Score partisan_hostility (MAGA) on framing opponents as enemies/evil; score sanctified_violence (apostasy) ONLY when a statement endorses/glorifies/calls for actual physical harm against a present-day group. Demonizing rhetoric with no violence endorsement = MAGA-only. Violence against a non-political outsider with no partisan frame = apostasy-only. For partisan_media vs partisan_hostility: the hostile CONTENT is partisan_hostility; partisan_media fires ONLY on the separate act of treating a media source as authoritative. A church may score one axis, the other, or both — but each score must rest on its own evidence, not a shared sentence.
  • partisan_hostility is DIRECTIONAL toward the MAGA-aligned side, and direction is inferred from CONTENT, not only from a named party: most real MAGA hostility is coded/issue/theological (woke, globalists, groomers, open borders, 'child sacrifice', 'the media', stolen election) and names no party — score it; do NOT zero a quote merely because it does not say 'Democrat'. Conversely, criticism aimed AT Trump / a MAGA-aligned administration / ICE / the MAGA movement, and advocacy for its targets, is the opposite direction = 0 however intense (including coded 'empire'/'the state'). Score the speaker's endorsed stance, never quoted material they rebut. 'The current administration' resolves by sermon date.

Limitations & accuracy

  • Automated analysis can err. Extraction, transcription, and scoring are model-assisted; a model can mis-hear audio, misattribute a speaker, or miss context despite the independent verification pass.
  • Coverage varies. Each church carries a coverage-confidence band (high / med / low) derived from how much of its public footprint was actually captured; a score whose source coverage is below 0.5 is marked provisional everywhere it appears.
  • Point-in-time capture. Content reflects what was publicly available when it was retrieved and may be stale; churches change leadership, teaching, and websites.
  • Scores are editorial opinion. The quoted material is reproduced verbatim from public sources; the scores, bands, and criteria assignments are this project’s published, criteria-based analysis and editorial opinion grounded in that quoted material — not assertions of fact beyond the quotes themselves.
  • Unreviewed pins carry no score. Churches whose material was downloaded but not yet verified are explicitly labeled unreviewed and are never scored or shaded.

Corrections & right of reply

Anyone — including a church’s leadership or authorized representatives — may dispute the accuracy, attribution, or context of any quote or score. Demonstrable errors are corrected and the church is re-scored. Disputes that are not resolved can be noted alongside the record.
